First things first, don’t panic!
It’s not the end of the world! It is worth remembering that the percentage of graduates each year who go straight into grad jobs is extremely low. Graduate schemes in particular are notoriously competitive, so you should not feel discouraged if you don’t get onto one. So if you’re feeling like you can’t get onto a graduate scheme, take a deep breath, and read on.
1. Graduate schemes are not the only way in.
Grad schemes ares not the only way to gain access to the industry you want to work in. A friend of mine applied for loads of grad schemes in marketing, with no luck. They decided to start applying to entry-level jobs in smaller companies. As a result, they managed to get a job at a regional marketing agency. By landing this role in a smaller company they have successfully kick-started their career in marketing.
It is extremely unlikely that the first company you work for will be the last company you work for. Think of your first job as a chance to dip your toe into the industry. It’s important to learn the basics before you dive into the deep end! Once you have built up some experience, it will be much easier to get a role at a bigger company.
2. Work experience can give you the edge.
An alternative option would be to take on more work experience in the industry you are trying to enter. Although these roles are usually unpaid they are extremely valuable and can be the difference maker on your application. Companies really value experience, and by working for little to no money you’re showing a strong desire to work in the industry.
If you are lucky enough to get some work experience, you may be able to get a job out of it. It is not uncommon for companies to hire those on work experience. Make sure you put effort into your work experience, and make some friends! A good impression could be what ends up getting you your first job.
Of course unpaid work is expensive. We can’t all afford to spend months travelling to and from, a job we aren’t getting paid for. And more importantly, who wants to work for free for months on end?! However, it’s worth remembering that one week’s work experience is better than no experience. Once you have acquired some more experience you can apply for the next round of grad applications that become available and hopefully have more success.
Try both of these approaches and see which one works for you, both are great ways of kick-starting your career.
