Job applications are probably the least rewarding part of a job search. They are time consuming, boring, and often result in rejection. However, they are integral to landing a new job, so you need to get them right! We have put together 7 tips to help you smash job applications.
1. Know what it actually is you are applying for
- One insight I was told after starting my job was that many applicants didn’t understand what the industry was. In regards to PR, applicants regularly got confused between advertising and reputation management. This confusion undoubtedly happens within many industries. Ultimately you have a 0% chance of progressing to the next stage if your application shows you don’t understand the industry or job you are applying for.
2. Do your research
- It doesn’t take a lot to look into the company you are applying for. A company’s website will usually give you an insight into what said company’s values are and what work it is proud of. You can use this information to improve your application by showing you have the values they look for and have an understanding of their existing work.
3. Nail the basics
- Spelling mistakes just look rubbish. Get someone else to read your application once its finished and then check it carefully yourself before sending it off. A good use of punctuation is also a must.
4. Think outside the box (cliché)
- A cliché? Yes, but also true, hundreds of people can apply for any one position at any time, so its important to stand out. Make sure you understand the tone of the company you are applying for and then think of interesting ways to impress them in a way they would appreciate. For example, my friend who applied for a creative advertising agency was asked how he saw himself fitting in with the team. His response was to cut and paste himself into an existing photo of the current team and send it back to them. He got the job.
5. Start early
- To give yourself the best chance of being successful, you should start applying for grad schemes toward the end of your first term during your final year at uni.
6. Apply lots and often
- With every application you complete you increase your chances of getting a job. Don’t be disheartened when you get a rejection or no response at all. I know someone who applied for 50 different vacancies and only heard back from two companies. However, one of those two companies hired her and that’s all that matters.
Good luck!
